If you had the pleasure of being at the farm on Wednesday afternoon, you would have felt the essence of what spring sports are all about here at Wheeler. There was a palpable excitement across the entire campus, especially after such a rainy start to the spring season. The sun was out. Short sleeves were almost universal. Godley Field served as the site of a boys' lacrosse game between the Warriors and Concord Academy. The track was surrounded by energy, as we hosted a meet with Marianapolis, Mt. St. Charles, St. Andrew’s, Providence Country Day, and Williams School. O’Hara Field featured a blaze of golden Wheeler jerseys as the team battled Beaver Country Day on the baseball diamond. And all eight tennis courts were rocking as the Warriors took on Marianapolis. It was impossible not to feel the positivity of our sports program and the community as a whole. Here’s to more of those afternoons in the weeks ahead!
Boys Lacrosse took down Concord 15-3 and moved their record to 4-1 on the season (3-0 in EIL play). The Warriors featured seven different goal scorers and were led by Andy Kelly ’26 (four goals), Cameron Shippee ’26 (four goals), and Matthew Duffell ’25 (three goals). The team travels to Waltham on Friday to take on Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall, who defeated the Warriors in a non-league tilt a year ago.
Track and Field hosted a wonderful and competitive meet on Wednesday afternoon, and though the team finished second to Marianapolis in the boys' and girls' final standings, it was a highly successful day at Baker Field. The boys featured 26 personal best performances, and the girls added 22 personal best performances! Anaya Wilson ’26 continues to dominate in winning the shot, discus, and javelin. She broke the school record in the shot with a throw of 29’4.5.
Baseball fell to Beaver Country Day 20-6 on Wednesday after taking a 3-1 lead into the 4th inning. The Warriors managed six hits in the contest, led by two from Ty Scarcella ’27. Connor Mahoney ’25 drove in two runs, and Ben Diaz ’25 went 1-1 with a pair of walks. The team travels to Pingree tomorrow to take on the Highlanders in another EIL contest.
Girls Lacrosse pushed its record to 5-1 with an 18-12 win over Portsmouth Abbey. The Warriors were led by a balanced scoring attack of Anna Pizzarello ’25 (six goals, six assists), Violet Abedon-Pollock ’27 (three goals, four assists), Avery Flaherty ’31 (five goals, two assists), Sophia Roberts ’29 (three goals, two assists), and Ella DiBari ’25 (two goals, two assists). The team takes on perennial EIL power Winsor on Wednesday next week at the farm.
Girls Tennis dropped a close match to Marianapolis Prep 3-2. Although the Warriors dropped all three singles matches on the afternoon, the doubles teams of Ansley Fowler ‘29 and Mariluz Diaz ‘29, and Siya Singhal ‘26 and Carol Wang ’28, were both victorious. The team travels with the boys' squad on Saturday to Pingree for an EIL matchup.
Softball defeated Barrington’s JV team on Tuesday, 12-6, behind a 3-4 effort at the plate by Julia Murphy ’27 (four runs scored) and a 1-3 performance from Charlie Woodcome ’26 (three runs scored). Annalise Hait ’26 picked up the win for the Warriors on the mound. The team hosts back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday against Beaver Country Day and Pingree, respectively. Come cheer on the team at the farm!
Boys Tennis was led by the splendid racket work of Jason Zhang ’25, Reid Purdy ’25, and Eric He ’28, who defeated their opponents 36-2 in combined sets, and took down visiting Marianapolis Prep 5-0 on the day. The team pushes their record to 3-2 on the season as they prepare for Saturday’s EIL matchup at Pingree.
