Did You Know:
Wheeler is set to host Pingree
varsity teams on Saturday in Boys and Girls Soccer, Field Hockey, and Volleyball. While the two schools have parted from the annual Wheeler-Pingree
Day, there is much-rooted history behind the weekend and the schools.
Wheeler-Pingree Day began in the fall of 1989 when administrators from both schools wanted to create an athletic event to honor a faculty member who worked at both schools. From 1989 to 2019 the two teams squared off annually in all fall sports on a Saturday each October with Wheeler hosting in the even years and Pingree hosting in the odd years.
“Competing in Pingree Day [Pingree refers to it as Wheeler Day] was fun and exciting,” former Warrior student-athlete and current faculty member and coach Marya (McAndrew) Baldwin remembers. Each team had a traveling cup and the teams competed for the bragging rights to keep that cup in the school’s trophy case. “Those days were some of the most exciting from my time playing field hockey at Wheeler.”
During the first three years of Wheeler moving to the RIIL fully, both the schools made an effort to keep the games intact. However, with a COVID cancellation in 2020 and ongoing scheduling conflicts, the schools elected to not return to the games but to still recognize and honor the importance and history of those 30 years.
