For the second week in a row “Double Dubs” was the mantra you could hear from the Cross Country team huddle. The Warriors defeated Berwick Academy and Concord Academy in both their boys and girls races at Great Brook Farm State Park in Carlisle, MA. Wheeler claimed three of the top four spots in the boys race with Reid Wemple ’26 (1st - 17:28), Evan Atwood ’25 (2nd - 17:59), and Zach Crowthers ’26 (4th - 18:15). On the girls side, three Warriors claimed the top 3 spots - Ashton Carson ’27 (1st - 21:21), Zoey Frank ’26 (2nd - 21:33), and Evelyn Zhang ’25 (3rd - 21:55). The team travels to Portsmouth Abbey next week for their second EIL Meet of the season.
Boys Soccer defeated Berwick Academy 2-1 on Saturday courtesy of a dominant second half, which featured a pair of goals by Tomas Castano ’27 and an assist by Oscar Page ’27. The Warriors carried that momentum with them to Bancroft on Wednesday and walked off the field with a 4-0 win. The pair of wins moved the Warriors to 2-1 in EIL play and 3-1 overall. Coach Z and his squad host a tough St. Luke’s (New Canaan, CT) squad on Saturday as part of a double header with Field Hockey. Game time is 2pm at the farm.
A year ago, St. George’s and Berwick Academy made short work of the Warriors in their first Girls Volleyball season in 50 years. However, a year later, both schools saw Wheeler arrive to the court more experienced and competitive. While the team dropped both matches this past week, Coach Bea (Furtado) was thrilled with her team’s approach, grit, and competitiveness. “Coaches have been really complimentary on our growth from last year,” she said. “We are in close sets and these are all good games.” The Warriors host reigning EIL Champion and Class B finalist Newton Country Day on Saturday (12pm) at the farm.
Field Hockey went 3-0 over the last week with a win at Berwick (3-2), Mt. St. Charles (2-0), and Rocky Hill 1-0, which moves the Warriors to 4-0-1 on the season. The Warriors took down Berwick in an exciting overtime win, which featured 2 goals by Alex Kittredge ’26, a goal by Kara Schiano ’26, and a timely stick save by goalie Claire Kiley ’26. At home against the Mounties Monday, Wheeler’s Ella DiBari ’25 and Elena Rust ’25 found the back of the night for the Warriors. And on Wednesday, Rust scored the lone goal at Rocky Hill. The team hosts reigning EIL champions Newton Country Day on Saturday at the farm (12pm) in the first part of a double header with Boys Soccer.
Girls Soccer came storming back on Wednesday afternoon at Bancroft to capture a 4-2 win. The Warriors quickly went down 2-0, but pushed through the initial setback as the team saw goals from Sophia Roberts ’29, Niya Neves ’25, Clementine Groblewski ’26, and Julia Murphy ’27. The squad hosts Newton Country Day on Saturday on Baker Field at noon and then returns to Godley Field on Wednesday when they host Rocky Hill Country Day at 4:30pm.
The Golf team dropped a pair of league matches against Portsmouth Abbey and Pingree after opening the EIL slate with a win against Bancroft. The Warriors travels to Robert T. Lynch Municipal Golf Course in Brookline, MA next Wednesday to take on Berwick Academy in a neutral site match.
Outside the Season: Free Lower School Basketball Clinics
The Athletics Department is excited to announce a free six-week Basketball “Skills and Drills” program this fall. Beginning Saturday, Sept. 21, the Girls Varsity Basketball coaches and some returning US varsity players from the boys and girls teams will offer a weekly one-hour clinic for Wheeler students in grades K-5. Learn more about it here.
Did You Know:
Wheeler will add a varsity Wrestling program to its sports offerings this winter, which will be open to all students in grades 8-12. At this time, we have 13 interested students and we are hoping for more! If you’re interested in learning more about the program please email seankelly@wheelerschool.org.
Why wrestling? This will be Wheeler’s 23rd varsity sport (the most of any Eastern Independent League school) and it will be the third sport added in the last three years along with Sailing and Girls Volleyball. The goal of these additions is to meet demand and interest from our student body, but in doing so, we also wanted to be mindful that these programs would not take away from the participation numbers of existing programs. We feel confident that each of these three sports can exist in that capacity and add to the overall sports experience here at Wheeler.
Wheeler has a tradition-filled and successful athletics history, and we look forward to sharing more about that past each week in the Did You Know section!
