The Wheeler Girls Tennis team might have fallen a bit short in their bid for a State Championship, but they didn’t fall short collecting postseason accolades
.
Anna Cornelissen ‘21, Giuliana Mardo ‘21, and Miranda Ye ‘23 garnered 2019 Providence Journal First Team All-State, which tied the Warriors with Barrington for the most first team selections by any Rhode Island school.
Cornelissen, after taking a year off from interscholastic league play, received her second All-State nod en route to finishing 10-3 in the regular season and advancing to the Semi-Final Round of the State Tournament.
Mardo, who scored her third straight All-State selection and second straight on the first First Team, lost only a single match during the season before falling in the Quarterfinal Round of the State Singles Tournament.
Ye, only a freshman, moved seamlessly into varsity action this season. Her State Tournament debut consisted of a Second Round upset of the number four seed before bowing out to a teammate in the Quarterfinals.
In addition to the three All-State selections (who were also All-Division selections), the Warriors also placed Ada Bruno ‘20 and Ellie Feldman ‘21 on second team All-Division at doubles. The future appears bright for the Warriors as they return their top four singles players next season; including, 2018 All-State Selection Zeah Pivorunas ‘21.
